As autumn closes in, the woods are alight... even on gray and rainy days.  The light source?  Leaves.

Light in the Forest

I hiked as far as the 'moss trees', which you can see in more detail near the
bottom of this page.  All the tree trunks in this area look like they're
covered with long fuzzy socks.  Trees here never go completely bare;
they simply drop their leaves to reveal their winter underwear.

 

Characteristically tilted alder forest with ferns...
and a mid-story of yellow vine maples

The Oregon big-leaf maple makes tall splashes of color that accent the fall forest.

 

Along the forest road.  The air was filled with the wonderful earthy
scent of damp growing things and the sweet perfume of Douglas fir.

 

A vine maple reflected in McGowan Creek hints at the serenity of the fall forest.
