He pulled it closer and ran his hands over the dusty surface until his fingers pressed into an opening.  He pulled the thing to his nose and sniffed.  He rapped against it with his fingers; the sound was deep and hollow.  He reached around until he felt the place where the vine attached and pulled it carefully away.  Then he slid the melon into his sack and stood up, smiling.

"Grampa!  Hey, Grampa!" he called.  He didn't wait for the old man's reply.  "Your present's here!"
