Dearest Liza, At the outset I would not have believed that, years on, I would still be maintaining this correspondence. That I have done so is testament to an affection I have come to fully comprehend only with the passage of time. Our situation grows grave. Spender was charged with another mission that failed, and his excuses, casual and arrogant, ring hollow. Critical information was discovered that may yet be divulged, exposing our preparations and ending the all-important agreement. My confidence in the group has well-nigh failed. From that very day, I began to question the rationality of our course. I had always believed my ultimate desire was to protect you and the children, and there seemed no other course. Perhaps it was simply cowardice. The boys continue well. Adrian and Jenny have announced that they are expecting a baby--a girl. The child deserves a grandmother. If only I had gone in your stead.
