tree.

Back right corner of the yard. Behind me as I take the
picture are the chicken coop
and yard, the hazelnut tree (whose nuts are all claimed by the squirrels)
and the apple tree.

The cottage and fig tree. The figs are hard to reach,
but the tree provides
wonderful shade. Just to the left, out of the picture, is the huge
tulip poplar.

Along the fence line behind the fig tree, mounds of dirt sit
outside the trench we've
dug for the bamboo barrier (about 2.5' wide by 28" deep.) We thought
we were
going to have to hand-dig it--not a fun prospect, since the trench is 60
feet long--
until Aaron had the idea to use the rototiller. He digs up a strip the
length of the
trench, after which 3 or 4 people hop in with shovels and scoop out the
softened
dirt. Then subsequent passes are made, deepening the trench. Now
we're nearly
done, ready to install the barrier and the black bamboo trees you can see at
left.
Eventually they'll spread along the trench and grow up to 30 feet tall.

The half-grown 'little girls' I started this March.
These are heavy breed chickens--
Black Austrolorps and Golden-Laced Wyandottes--that will join our two Buff
Orpingtons, Grace and Nugget, and weather the winter cold better than the
smaller breed girls we had last year. Hopefully we'll get eggs
through the winter.
